More on the Job Support Scheme

On 24 September, the Government announced its next stage of support for businesses facing financial difficulty due to the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The new Job Support Scheme will open for 6 months from 1 November 2020 and covers employees working reduced hours.

Under the scheme, employers can claim reimbursement from HMRC for part of employees’ wages for the unworked hours. Employees must be working at least one third of their contracted hours for which the employer will fund. The cost of the remaining unworked hours will be split equally between the employer, the government and the employee.

A significant feature of the scheme is that employers cannot make employees redundant or give them notice of redundancy while they are claiming for them under the Job Support Scheme. For full details of the scheme go to the government website www.gov.uk
